Introduced Accidental Escapes depicts scenarios in which natural phenomena within specific landscapes are engaged in strange and unnatural ways. Articulating what should or should not be considered natural is a task I find fascinating and remarkably complicated. With this in mind I have sought out iconographic ways to depict nature, drawing not from nature itself, but instead looking for nature as it is already represented in culture. These pictorial sources include John James Audubon’s pioneering ornithology, Walter Foster’s foolproof landscape painting books, assorted grade-school primers and science textbooks, Roger Tory Peterson’s field guides, and the Google’s unwieldy image search. Of the six drawings, four were drawn with homemade walnut ink (The Littoral Zone, Egg Beach, In the Iris Bed, and Floral Island).
